CPR-Rated Cable

CPR directly affects a number of different bodies and organisations within the EU.

• Manufacturers’ products need to meet stringent CPR requirements
• Building designers, contractors, distributors, and installers need to be aware of CPR for building and civil engineering projects
• Testing institutes will be checking that products meet CPR standards
• Authorities within EU Member States are responsible for communicating and enforcing CPR on a national level

On 1st July 2017, all cables supplied to the construction industry have a mandatory requirement to apply CE marking to their products according to the appropriate European or national regulation level.

Leviton is one of 21 European cable manufacturers that directly helped develop CPR standards. We worked closely with industry advocate Europacable to offer a full range of CE-marked products that comply with the new regulations. This required gaining third-party certification and participating in an ongoing maintenance programme.

Leviton continues to provide CPR support and advice to specifiers, installers, and the supply chain.

Also, for easy recognition of Euro classification, in addition to CE-marked labelling, Leviton is color coding copper cabling. Our unique color coding simplifies visual inspections and allows for easy verification of CPR classification. This helps avoid mislabelling or mixing old cable stock. More color coding information will soon be released.

Trade within the EU has traditionally come up against a number of technical barriers, as each country has its own national standards and testing protocols. CPR’s streamlined set of standards was developed in consultation with members of the EEA to create a straightforward means to buy and sell construction products used in building and civil engineering projects.

The CE mark shows that a construction product is fit for purpose. It’s recognized throughout the EEA and represents a harmonised approach to setting and enforcing standards. CE-marked construction products meet seven basic requirements.

2. Safety in case of fire
3. Hygiene, health, and environment
4. Safety and accessibility in use
5. Protection against noise
6. Energy economy and heat retention
7. Sustainable use of natural resources

For cabling, safety in the case of fire (#2) and sustainable use of natural resources (#7) are the two most important requirements. We offer copper and fiber cabling that meets both of these requirements.
